Information about CALTANISSETTA Founded by the Greeks, it underwent numerous dominations over the centuries. It achieved its greatest prosperity in the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the exploitation of the sulphur mines. The remotest roots of Caltanissetta are as yet uncertain. Relics from the Bronze Age and several cave-sepulchres seem to attest to prehistoric settlements. The earliest documented information goes back to the Norman conquest, dated 1086. A remarkable urban development was recorded in the 15th century, Caltanissetta extending its territory beyond the city walls. The natural landscape of Caltanissetta, is characterized from the yellow color of the grain, of the sulphur and of the sun interrupted from the green of the olives and from the blue of the numerous lakes carsici. Caltanissetta is much frequented by tourists, notably over Easter period, here celebrated with a series of long-waited events such as two processions taking place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The city offers sites of both historical and naturalistic interest as well as a much appreciated cuisine.
